We’ve Taken Off To Our 2019 Travels!

Goodbye to the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there over the winter months. Many new friends and tons of activities to keep us busy. So, we are now well rested and ready to begin Year #3 of our Journey. I still marvel at how quickly this time has gone by. We have many new places this year and a few favorites to repeat as well.

Leaving Our Winter Home

It was actually kind of sad to leave behind this place that we called home for the last few months. We leave behind the people and many activities, but take all the memories with us.

I was a little concerned that something would malfunction after having not been used for a few months. But, the slides and jacks all retracted and we hitched up without issues. I only drove the Ford truck a few times while we were there. Usually once a month a short joy ride just to keep diesel fuel sloshed around.

The Drive North

It was all very smooth once we were hitched and took off . The F-350 dually does a great job pulling the rig and stopping. The winds were out of the north, of course, at 15 MPH that promptly dropped our miles per gallon down to 8.5 for the short trip up to Falfurrias.

On the road again. South Tx Hwy 281
Many wildflowers along the road added to the enjoyment.
This is the kind of driving that I love. Wide open spaces and little traffic.

Our first destination is San Antonio that was 250 miles, a little farther than I wanted to drive. So, we stopped at a very friendly RV park in Falfurrias, Texas at the 90 mile mark. Countryside RV Park of South Texas was just off of hwy 281. And 281 was a very pleasant road, not an interstate, but four lanes and not much traffic to deal with.

It was a drizzly, light rainy day to drive and had stopped raining by the time we arrived. After setting up, we grabbed a beer and went to the park’s rec room to play some cards. It is rough, this retired life, but someone has to do it!

The park owner showed us to the site and helped with the set up. Very nice! He explained that he and his wife searched all over the country to find an RV park to buy and run before finding this 97 unit RV park. My neighbor said that they have been coming to the park for 8 years over the winters. Good weather and very reasonable rates.

Tuesday morning we were up and on the road by 10:30 and arrived by 2:30 pm at the San Antonio KOA park. The 168 miles were mostly smooth with a couple of exciting moments around construction in the city. Better MPG at 10 with little or no wind.

Sunrise this morning in San Antonio! I like how the new oak leaves silhouette against the sky. The oak trees have been leaved out for over a month down on the border, but are just now blooming here!

San Antonio

This is the same KOA park that we stayed at back in December on the way south. We are looking forward to another great week in this city of the Riverwalk. Here is the LINK to our last visit to San Antonio. Today, we walked 4.2 miles along the beautifully landscaped Riverwalk, had lunch at a place with a riverside table, then stopped at the Museum of Art on the way back home.

We really enjoyed our last stay here. Many things to do and the Riverwalk is just incredible. It could be a good retirement location, although gets very hot and humid in the summer months.

Trish by the roses.
Me along the riverwalk.
I believe this is a cormorant. If not, it should be.
Nice example of an art deco building.
Look at the metalwork on the bridge. Very cool!
The boats today were super packed with people. And on a Thursday!
I liked this shot of the tables and umbrellas all lined up.
Margarita!

The weather today in San Antonio is sunny and 86 degrees. Close to perfect!

  1. Hitched up without a hitch huh? Love the photos! TX looks beautiful. Glad you two are enjoying retirement so much.

  2. San Antonio is one of Sherri and my favorite places to visit. Probably our favorite within Texas. We have spent 5 or 6 long weekends and one, almost a week there over the years. Like to walk through the Alamo every time. Your visit to Fredricksburg should be fun as well. A couple of side trips in the area are Kerrville. A fun little town and a must see is Enchanted Rock (it’s a State Park or State Rec area). Only a short trip from town. Worth the trip.

    Have fun.

  3. Enjoy your return visit to SA – we have enjoyed several visits there. We are settled in Savannah for 2 months camp-hosting. 10 miles from all the grandkids – loving it! Safe travels!

  4. Best Wishes for safe travels and fun exploration. I was in San Antonia many years ago for my sisters wedding. Enjoy your visit.
