Yes, the summer and fall have come to an end, and we begin another winter season on the gulf coast of Florida. But we do take a few extra days on our southbound journey. No since in getting in a huge hurry, since we are happily retired and have no pressing schedule. We delayed leaving until after Thanksgiving and seeing the family for a combined Holidays. I’ll cover our favorite southern city, Savannah, Georgia, in this blog update…
Red Gate
The route down to our winter home is 750 miles and a good halfway point is Savannah. Plus it has some great streets to walk. And some of the best seafood! Our RV Park is the Red Gate Farms RV Resort, located just 12 minutes from the historic downtown. We have stayed here 4-5 times over the years. Very scenic park that is more used as a wedding venue in their many facilities. We booked this park for four nights. The first day in was arriving later in the day at about 4pm. Just time to get set up before dark.
Old Pirate’s House
This is an iconic restaurant in Savannah. All the bus tours drive past it and tell of its history. But we had never been there before this trip.
The site was first developed in 1733 by General Oglethorpe as a garden to help feed the early settlers. The first building on the site was in 1734 and called The Herb House which is still standing and is part of the restaurant. This portion of the building is the oldest standing structure in the state of Georgia.
Later in 1753 the Inn and Tavern were built to feed and house visiting sailors and pirates to this new port city. Yes, they do claim that pirate ships would dock here for R&R. Or just Arrrrrr.
The food was very good. Not exceptional as we find in some other eateries, but more of a destination mass produced sort of fare.
The Travelling Browns
We were fortunate to be able to meet this full-time RVing couple for dinner one evening while in town. They work-camp at Skidaway State Park during a few winter months. We first met Steve and Connie in Missouri in 2018 and have crossed paths three more times since then. They are almost the most travelled people that we know.
This last year they travelled from Georgia, to Arizona, to Oregon and then to the Northeast before returning back to Georgia. And then they have an annual motorcycle tour, usually a Hawaiian trip, usually a cruise, and this coming year a repositioning cruise to Europe. They stay on the move! And they are great folks!
Savannah Walk About
On our last full day in town, I ventured out on my own for many miles of walking and a grouper sandwich. Plenty of photos, but you may have seen them in one of our prior trips here. May be some different ones as well.
Wrap Up
We have arrived in New Port Richey, Florida to our winter home or rather RV park. Made some new friends and reacquainted with others. The weather has been great down here with plenty of Florida sunshine. Thanks for following along! Take care and God Bless.
Randy,
Another great update! Thanks for allowing is to come along!
Jim
Jim – where have you decided to spend the winter? I lost track of you when you were in Canada and somehow I expect you did not stay. 🙂
Glad you arrived in Florida safely.
Robert
Yes, safe trip with some busy roads!
Savannah is a great place to visit. My oldest sister Marilyn lived near there and on a visit we drove to Savannah and walked around. Really enjoyed seeing the sites! Its great that you keep meeting up with other traveler’s doing the same thing. If I remember you may have mentioned them in a past post but it could have been other folks I am thinking about as well. Have a great time in NPR. When do you typically head out from here?
Take care!
Mike
Hey Mike – sorry for the delay. Meeting with friends while traveling has been one of the many enjoyments. We stay in Florida until the first week in April. Hopefully, the snow will be melted by then! 🙂
