I can’t believe how quickly time flies by. Good grief, half of our stay here is already over. This has been a great place to spend a month at the Orchid Lake RV Resort. The weather has been perfect with temps in the mid seventies up to low eighties. Even with the warm weather there is always a light breeze, so under our awning has been a great place to chill. A few times we have ventured out into the real world and one of those ventures was to a small Greek village of Tarpon Springs.
Tarpon Springs is about 40 minutes south of here and has about 23,000 people. It also has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any US town. Many Greek shops are all along the downtown area and they used to have a large sponging industry.
We stopped into a cafe and had a Greek coffee and a baklava. My first time for both. The coffee is made with the grounds in the bottom of the cups and served in small cups like espresso. It was interesting.
Then it was off to take a boat excursion ride up the Anclote river to the Anclote Island. We saw a few dolphins and enjoyed seeing the homes and boats along the river.
The Tarpon Springs Museum is located inside of the old train depot. We toured through this free exhibit and learned a few more facts about the area including that most of the Greeks came here via Gary Indiana. I guess they went to Gary soon after arriving at Ellis Island to work in the steel mills. Why they left Gary Indiana, I can probably guess.
Pat and I are continuing to walk about 3 miles a day and enjoying the many activities at our RV park. We stay here until Feb 28th when we start migrating north.
Take care and God Bless.
Thanks for blogging and for all the neat information. I never miss reading your latest post and I always enjoy the pictures. I checked Netflix for the movie “Beneath the 12 mile reef” filmed in 1953, but Netflix didn’t have it. Sounds like my kind of movie. Enjoy the rest of your winter and looking forward to seeing you at Claytor Lake. 🙂
Thanks Janet. I also wanted to check out the 12 mile reef movie. Pat said that you found it on YouTube, so we will check it out.
