Tioga & Wellsboro, PA; a Charming Town & the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

Our next stop on the 2018 agenda is to a small town on the northern border of Pennsylvania, next to New York.  Our campground is the Ives Run Corps of Engineers park in Tioga, PA, located near the picturesque town of  Wellsboro, PA.  This is the same park we stayed a week last year.  Our drive was a little longer than we like at about 200 miles, but it all worked out fine!  Here is the link to our website for last year’s visit (Link).

Our route to the rural north central part of Pennsylvania.

Ives Run Corps of Engineers Campground

The Ives Run is a very nice, rural park, with tons of open green space, a large lake for water sports, and full hook up campsites that are well spaced apart.  It was a very relaxing week, with some good weather.  The highs were in the mid 70’s and lows in the low 50’s.  Very low humidity.

The only slight negative was the vast amounts of pollen from the trees.  Everything gets covered in green dust and poor Pat struggles with her allergies.  It seems that we are following the pollen trail northward!

Wellsboro, PA

In our stay at Ives Run last year, we only heard about Wellsboro late in our stay and did not make it to this well kept little village.  This year we came into town three times for various reasons.

There were some incredible looking large homes in this town. A couple were now B&Bs.

The population is about 3,000 people and in the early 1900’s it was a bustling economy with many manufacturers, it was a shipping point, and a trade center for a large area.  The town was incorporated in 1830 and had the first mass produced light bulb factory.

This is one of the most charming small towns that we have visited.  It has a wide tree-lined main street that is lit with over a hundred gas lamps from another era.  To add to this feeling of being caught in a time warp is the lack of any chain stores or chain restaurants.  But they do have many small mom and pop stores all along the main street.  Just like back in the day!

Gas lamp street lights. Something that you just do not see anymore. I would have loved to see them at night.

The main street is large and wide and separated by a median with the gas lights.  If you look close you can see our big red truck parked by the flag.

We had a very good dinner at one of the nicest restaurants, the Wellsboro House.  I had the sea scallops and Trish had the steak.  Did I mention they also brew their own beer?  I had the ESB.  Very tasty.

Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

This canyon is one of the big draws to this area.  It is about 20 minutes out into the rural countryside and you must choose to see the east or west sides since they are quite a distance apart on small back roads.

The canyon stretches for 45 miles and has depths up to 1500 feet.  There is also an old railroad track bed that can be biked or hiked.  We walked on a portion of the trail to the outlook vistas.

It was good weather again and a very scenic way to spend an afternoon.  Thanks for following along on our Epic RV Journey.  Sign up for the automated email notice of our updates and leave a comment if you wish.

Take care and God Bless.
