Well, that month sure got away from me. I had planned to complete this post of our short week RV trip within a few days of the first post. But then my project list and all the other normal summer activities have happened. Such is life. Too many hobbies and interests and not enough time! It has been a great summer so far as we are beginning to see the end of the extreme hot spell and some more fall like temps.
Recap of Prior Post
In the prior post, we packed up the RV and headed southwest about 45 miles to an RV park near Wytheville, VA. Our base camp for a week to explore points of interest around there. Our secondary goal was a thorough RV cleaning as it had been in storage and work was done on it. We explored Wytheville, attended a dinner theater, saw the Shot Tower State Park, Foster Falls, and Big Walker Mountain.
Bristol, VA/TN
Bristol Virginia has a population of 17,000 people and the unique thing about the city is the state line with Tennessee run right along Main Street. One side is VA and the other is TN. I’m sure other towns in the US have this oddity, but I’m not sure where. The TN half is actually larger at 27,000 folks.
We walked along main street and talked to a few shop owners. One guy mentioned that the two states have some very different laws on each side of the street. One recent law change has allowed casino gambling in Virginia, with all the correct licensing and permits. And a new casino had just opened the day before in an old, somewhat refurbished shopping mall. Their longer term plans are to build a large Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, if the casino plans workout. We stopped in on their Day 2 of grand opening and the place was packed!
Another claim to fame is the town is called the birthplace of country music with the Carter family getting there start here. We did not stay long, just enough time to donate $20 to the casino and for lunch, then drove down the road to Abingdon, VA. We’ll have to come back and see some more of this town.
Abingdon, VA
With only 8,000 people this is a small town, but is jam-packed with history and historic buildings. Abingdon got its start in 1750 and has many historically significant sites and features a fine arts and crafts scene centered on the galleries and museums along Main Street.
We walked a couple of miles along Main St, saw the visitor center, and a few other shops, but that was about all that we had time for on this excursion. The town also has the Barter Theater that pulls people from all over. They have stage productions in a few buildings. Another reason to return!
Thanks for following along! In my next update, is the RV trip to our local State Park, Claytor Lake. God Bless and take care.
Very interesting places that we have not visited!!!
Thanks for the update! Working on our plans for March through May of next year. Need to explore around there.
