We have been at our Destin/Miramar beach location for five days and starting to get into some sort of a pattern. Usually a morning walk on the beach, out exploring somewhere in the middle of the day and then back to the beach for the sunset. Oh, there are the usual jobs around the RV and small maintenance projects as well, so it is not all a walk on the beach. 🙂
The weather continues to be sunny, cloudless skies with highs in the low 80’s with lows in the 60’s. After the sun sets it does cool off quickly and at about dark, the mosquitoes begin their attack. I found out a couple of nights ago while grilling some pork chops at about 6:30 pm.
Since the Florida panhandle is on central time, sunset is now before 5:00 pm after the time change last weekend. So early. I remember back in my worklife of going to work in the dark and coming back home in darkness. Blah! Well, it seems the shorter days are even in the warmer climates, but we have plenty of time to get out during the daytime hours.
One of the enjoyable things about living in an RV park is meeting your neighbors. Most of the time, it is very interesting to find out their story. Are they weekenders or full-timers, still working or retired, and where are they going next.
Our neighbors here a few days ago were very interesting. Jeff and his wife Sonya. They are Florida residents and just came here for a 4 day trip. Jeff is a senior pilot with a major airline and flies the Airbuss now and used to fly the wide body L-1011.
We discussed many topics including his nearing retirement plans, RV maintenance, and the changing population of Florida over the last 20 years. We also compared RV parks in various areas of the country and one that we both had used. It was very interesting to hear their stories. This is one of the really cool parts of this RV travel life.
On our way over to watch the sunset we stopped at the Surf Hut located right on the beach. This open air restaurant/bar has a happy hour from 4-6 pm. A nice place to have a drink and watch the sunset. Their food looked good as well, but we have not tried it yet.
This last Sunday, Pat found a local Presbyterian PCA church for us to attend. We try to attend a good bible believing church in each location as we travel. This Destin church had a small but very friendly congregation. We may have found a church home for this location.
As I update this blog, I’m watching Fox news and they are reporting on the Virginia governor’s election today. It looks to be a very close race with Ed Gillespie and Ralph Northam. We should have done an absentee ballot, but forgot to arrange that. Darn.
The economy and healthcare are the major issues with the Virginia voters. That reminds me that open enrollment is now underway for healthcare insurance providers. We need to determine if we make a change from Liberty Healthshare or continue with it until Medicare age. A complicated choice.
I’m waking up at 4:30 am now instead of my normal 5:30 since the time change. Need to adjust my internal clock so I don’t fall asleep by 8pm. Tigger was up early with me this morning. He likes the fireplace.
Yesterday, we drove about 30 minutes south of here to a small town of Seaside Florida. Most of my photos do not really capture it, so only a few were shown here. This is a very upscale planned community located on the beach and up to a couple of blocks from it.
The homes were built during the eighties and are small cape cod styled beach houses that are very close together along narrow shaded lanes. It is hard to describe actually. You have to be there I guess. The small homes are around $2 million and up.
They have a sort of town square with their community building, a post office, and a street lined with Airstream food trucks. Several restaurants and bars along the beach. The whole town may be less than a mile long.
Take care and God Bless.
Enjoy reading of your adventures!!
Thanks guys
Sounds like you are really enjoying the Florida panhandle. It is one of our favorite places to go to the beach. We have stayed a few places betweeen Destin and Panama City. Have not stayed at Seaside because it is expensive and crowded but a cool place to see. Autumn is clearly the best time for the panhandle area. So glad you are relaxing and staying a while. Got back from China Sunday night. Not at all what I expected but great trip. Having problem with jet lag and waking up at all hours but getting better. Kinda of what you are experiencing with end of daylight saving time. My body has days and nights reversed or something. Keep enjoying your retirement adventure as we all do through your blog. Thanks. Love Lorna
This is our first time to stay in the Florida panhandle area and you are so right about the area. The November weather is perfect and the crowds are small. Even better. We would love to hear all about your China adventures sometime. Good luck on the 12 hour time change jet lag!
