Staying In – Day 5 of Coronavirus Crisis

This is the 5th day that we have mostly stayed within our small footprint at our RV site within Pioneer Creek RV Resort. There is still much activity going on at this park. Daily meetings, horseshoes, shuffleboard, wood shop and many more. My day yesterday was a quick, very early trip to Walmart and then some chores around here, with a hike thrown in for exercise!

I do have 2-3 posts about activities from the last few weeks that I am behind on getting out. Something for me to do in the confinement I suppose.

Meanwhile we do have some great weather. Upper 80’s everyday with overnight lows in the mid 60’s. No rain in the 10 day forecast.

Our Day

My day started with an early morning trip to Walmart to pick up a few more supplies. At 7am our local Walmart was busier that I would have imagined with shoppers. It seemed that everybody was on the lookout for those potential sick, coughing people.

Walmart toilet paper section.

I got most of what I wanted, but the toilet paper shelves were completely empty. Not even the cheap single ply was left. Well, we have about 2 weeks stocked up, so should be fine. Pat ordered some from Walmart online to be delivered, unless it gets hijacked somewhere along the line. People are crazy!

We have a local state park about a mile away. Paynes Creek Historic State Park has a small museum and 3-4 hiking trails through an “old Florida” environment complete with swamp and a river.

We have hiked there a couple of times. Very well taken care of trails and a clean park. Strange though that it is never busy. No one in the office, museum, or anywhere in the park. Kind of like one of those post apocalypse movies. Just us against whatever might be out there. Spooky.

Then it was back to the park to wash the truck and car from all the pollen, drain the RV tanks, and to recharge the water softener. Busy day for me, retired accountant.

This morning, the RV park in Mercedes Texas, will open for reservations for this next winter for those not currently in the park. If we do not get into the park, then it will either be Florida or else Arizona for the winter. It is a long way down there to the Rio Grande Valley, but it is also a great winter location.

China Coronavirus Update

It seems to just keep getting worse. The president’s news conference on Friday brought a nice rebound in the market. It may not stay, but nice anyway.

It is now a national emergency and most states have called it that too. The one thing that I got in yesterday’s news is that all the current restrictions are aimed at flattening out the peak of cases here in the US. We are currently in the steep increasing slope of new cases. Instead of sharp peak like China and Italy, Dr. Fauci is hoping for a lesser curve and then a decline at some point.

The UK and Ireland are now on the do not enter list. I also heard something again about possible restrictions within the states. Almost liking it to how it must have been back during WW-II with shortages and travel restrictions.

Florida (our current location) is thought by some to have possible hospitals that become overrun by the older, retired population. Maybe not the best place to be in a plague situation. Our park is very remote and away from any population centers and airports, so we have that going for us.

Every single day the news is filled with more closings. Before long it will only be grocery stores and drug stores being open. Some folks are still going about their lives as normal. That is great to not panic. But, everyone should read about the situation in Italy who is further along the curve than us in the USA.

I have started a China Coronavirus Tracker. I understand that the number of cases is understated due to test kit availability and that some folks just stay at home to recover and never get tested. With that understanding, here is the data from the GISAID website.

Today we will listen to a sermon audio online from one of our favorite churches. Maybe work in a hike and some relaxing. Whatever we do will include social distancing and plenty of extra hand washing! Take care and God Bless.
