It is now day 10 of our 21 day anniversary cruise. Halfway done already. The stop today is at St Kitts, a volcanic island named after St. Christopher. It is a beautiful tropical island that has a rich history where sugar cane was once the primary economic product until the soil gave out.
History
It was the first British settlement in the West Indies, founded in 1623 and fought over by France, Spain, and England for 150 years. St. Kitts then gained its own independence from Great Britain in 1983. Today it remains a monarchy within the UK commonwealth.
Tourism is the primary industry today. The old sugar plantations provide some of the islands most picturesque vistas, along with volcanic views, tropical rain forests, plus the black and golden sand beaches. The volcano is dominant, but dormant and is at 3,800 feet above sea level. Pretty incredible when rising from sea level.
Narrow Gauge Railroad
The St. Kitts Scenic Railway takes passengers on a 3-hour tour that makes a 30-mile circle around the beautiful Eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts, with 18 miles by narrow gauge train and 12 miles on sightseeing buses. Built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane from the island’s sugar plantations to the sugar factory in the capital city of Basseterre, today the “Last Railway in the West Indies” provides visitors an unsurpassed opportunity to experience the scenery and culture of this unspoiled country.

The weather is about as consistent as possible. Not complaining, mind you… The welcome sign at the end of the pier. All aboard for the open air top section. The old train engine boneyard They served rum drinks after we got away Yep, we are enjoying the ride. They even had two girls perform some native dances Grasses now grow where sugar cane used to grow Black volcanic rock dots the landscape from the last eruption Broken remains from sugar processing building Tired and hot from the three hour tour
Thanks for following along and God Bless.
Looks like a great visit. Such fun!
This little RR has nothing on the Durango RR!
Yeah I like that train. Have to ride it again this summer.
