This is our third trip to this beautiful southern city. Savannah, Ga – we are back again! The first visit was just after I retired in May 2017. The second time was the entire month of March in 2018 when we met family (Mike & Lorna). This visit was just one week on our way south to Florida for the winter. We revisited some of our favorite restaurants, walked many of the 22 squares, and met up with some RV friends. Savannah is one of our favorites!
Relocation
The drive was longer than I like due to bypassing Charleston SC. It was actually about 285 miles as we drove west to I-95, then south down to Savannah, Georgia. Not a bad drive, stopping at the midpoint for the lunch that we packed and grabbed the required after lunch coffee from a Pilot truck stop station.
We stayed at the Red Gate Campground. One of the most unique places that we have parked the 5th wheel. Their main business seems to be a venue location for weddings and other events. The reason that we like it is the close proximity to the city. In 10 minutes, we could be parked and walking to our destination.
Meeting Friends – The Traveling Browns
We first met Steve and Connie a few months after we took off on our full time journey. They were also just beginning full time travel. The RV park was located in the Ozarks of Missouri and we crossed paths again in Branson, Mo. It was great to compare notes with another couple on places they have been and planning to go.
They are currently working as camp hosts at Skidaway State Park, about 20 minutes from Savannah. Their kids and grandkids are located here, so a 2-3 month work camping stay works out well. A paid campsite in exchange for a few hours work a day.
Pat and I met Steve and Connie one day to hike the trails at Skidaway and have a great dinner at their site. We had a great time and enjoyed exchanging stories about our experiences. You can follow their travels at:

Savannah Photos
We never tire of seeing the classic looking homes in Savannah. Just strolling up and down the grid of streets from square to square. The squares are the park like settings every couple of blocks throughout the city. They are all well maintained. Savannah’s population is 146,000 and is quite spread out. Traffic is not too bad, except at peak hours. Elevation is 49 feet. Enjoy the photos.
Food
Finding some great eats is one of my favorite pastimes. Pat is a great cook, but it is always nice to try something new. This city has so many great choices it is crazy. Here are a few that we tried.
17Hundred90 – One of Savannah’s oldest and finest. We both had the filets. Very nice. The restaurant is located in the basement of this very old inn.
Lady & Sons (Paula Deen’s) – One of the very popular places for tourists. Maybe not so much for the locals. Our food was okay. Pat had the fried catfish while I had their top seller, the chicken pot pie.
Crystal Beer Parlor – More of a gastro pub, this place has some good food and tons of beer selections.
Leopold’s Ice Cream – the best
Tybee Island
We drove over for a walk on the beach and to have lunch at the Sundae Cafe. It was a washout. We discovered that the beach was completely eroded by Hurricane Irma. It is basically gone. And then the Sundae Cafe is no longer open at lunch. Maybe due to it being offseason. Not sure.
Wrap Up
Another relaxing stay in one of our favorite places. We were also able to attend church at Kirk of the Isles. This is the Presbyterian PCA church that we attended last time.
We are now in Cortez Florida at Buttonwood RV Resort for the month of December. More on that later. The next blog update will be for the oldest US city of St. Augustine, Florida. Take care and God Bless.
Nice review and great to see again. Hope to join you guys for one of your stops in Savannah!
