Rio Grande Valley Texas – Quilt Show & Some Thoughts

As I write this, I’m watching the morning news. The cold weather Up North and the federal budget are a couple of the main stories. The temperatures in Chicago got to minus 22 degrees, but not quite a record cold. Wow! John Steinbeck was quoted as saying “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” Now that I am wearing shorts and flip flops and sitting on the warm southern US border, I can actually see the wisdom in that!

I have lived in that type of weather in prior years. It is so cold that it hurts to breathe. There is some natural law too that on these cold days the car would not start. That was back in my gotta go to work days. So, get out the starting fluid and jumper cables. All while wearing gloves, two stocking caps, and three coats!

The new federal budget does not seem to be any closer due to Chuck and Nancy not willing to negotiate. While I have always steered away from politics in this blog, I just do not understand the current democratic leadership that will oppose a common sense proposal, and risk another shutdown, just so not to give the president a win.

Having a border wall is an obvious must have as well as more security along the wall. I recently heard a couple of examples. The first is Disney World. They have a wall and security around it. If you climbed their wall, you would be arrested and charged with a crime. Would become a criminal. There are some who want open borders in our country.

The second example was a prison. If we took down the walls and just used drones to patrol, what would happen? I suspect most would flee.

Yes, border walls are not perfect. If illegals have the resources, they can tunnel under the wall. Just like El Chapo did to break out of the Mexican prison. So you need the wall and drones and more patrol officers to improve the safety.

Living here about five miles from the border, I can see firsthand the issue. I’ve talked to locals here and Winter Texans alike and most all agree with necessity of the wall. The illegals cross over the unwalled sections, both day and night, and either cut down the ranchers fences or break into homes and property.

Another example. We recently had lunch with a retired couple from the church we attended in McAllen. They used to own a ranch out in the country about 13 miles from the border. He would routinely see people on his property. The border patrol said they were human traffickers. Usually the people would leave his property when asked. One time he came upon a large group. They would not leave, so he had to present his legally carried firearm. Then they left. He finally got tired of it so sold the property.

Our RV resort is fenced in and has 24/7 guarded entry points. Just common sense. I did hear of one car that was broken into inside the park. It was located along the southern section of the park, right next the fence. Maybe we need some drones?

My concern about the US border wall is about the security issues. Don’t misunderstand, I have friends from Mexico. Coming into the US through the legal process is the right thing. Nancy, needs to do the right thing as well.

My background in the accounting field for 30 plus years has built a very strong follow the rules ethic. We had many rules and regulations to follow and we were the rules overseer for the rest of the organization. Heck, whenever I come to a stop sign, in the middle of the night, with no one around, I will stop.

Okay, back to the normal programming. 🙂 Leave a comment if you agree/disagree. Should I do more of this? Let me know.

Quilt Show

Our resort held this major show a few days ago and had about 1,200 people attend. Quilting is very popular with the ladies. One lady said her quilt took one full year to make working on it each day. Wow! They are quite incredible works of art. I just took pictures of the ones that I liked and have many photos below. Click on any photo to see it in larger format.

My mother-in-law, Pat, has been a quilter for years and years, until recently her eyesight became an issue. She has created quilts for most of the family as cherished heirlooms. Hers were hand quilted, unlike many today that are machine done. Very nice. Here are two photos of her and her last quilt.

Next up on the agenda is a day trip across the border into Progresso Mexico for some shopping and sightseeing. Our local friends say that it’s safe as long as you stay on the main street and only go a couple of blocks. We’ll see.

Take care and God Bless.

  1. Hello Randy! I’m really enjoying your post. First off, I totally agree we need the border along with patrol and drones….just makes common sense. Second, I have actually made a few quilts and wow….they are not easy. Of course mine didn’t turn out as nice as Pats or the ones in pictures but they were made by me 😊 I’m actually thinking of starting my own blog to teach scrapbooking…we’ll see if I take the plunge. Looking forward to your next post. If you get close to League City/Houston, look up Tracy Willis. Take care and God bless you too!

  2. The quilts are amazing!!! I quilted with my mother-in-law – those were some very happy times for me. Glad you guys are still enjoying your adventures! I am okay with you posting your political views – I enjoy all of your writing!

  3. Looks like a nice visit to see the quilts. Hope you have safe travels if you go into Mexico.

The only thing I would safe on our government it that common sense is long gone. I do not think they really care anymore about fixing things. It’s only not allowing the other side to “win”. Even if a win is good for the country. It’s an embarrassing shame.
