A few months ago in this blog, I included some new hobbies that I had picked up over the winter. Namely wood carving and painting. I have been working on the carvings occasionally, but have started painting some landscape scenes as we have traveled to different locations. Places we have been…
I still believe that my talent at creating artwork is at the beginner stage, but that is fine with me. I do believe that I am improving. And I find it very enjoyable. A couple of months ago, Pat and I were discussing my painting a scene from each location that we visit. That sounded like a pretty cool idea. To document our travels through the blog, through photos, and to try to capture some highlight in an acrylic painting in a small enough RV size.
Just starting with our 2019 travel schedule will keep me plenty busy. If I get bored, I may go back to the last two years of travels. I’ve already done a few Maine coastal paintings over the winter.
After experimenting with some different sized canvas and paper, I decided the 9×12 inch heavy paper (140 lb) would work the best and could be placed in an artwork binder. The binder can be neatly stored on our bookshelf until needed.
Our country has so many beautiful and interesting places and things to capture. I’ve tried to create a realistic painting, in an impressionistic style, from mostly our photos. Sometimes, I take a few liberties in “cleaning up” the photo. Hopefully, I have captured the essence of the scene. I’m still learning as I go.
In the space below, I will insert the photo and then the painting of the landscape of the ones that I have done so far. Hope that you enjoy!
And finally, a painting from New Orleans that we visited in the fall. No photo for this one, but a painting that I liked.
Thanks for following along! I’ll try to add my work in the blog when a new one is finished. We are in our second week at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Our last day is Friday and then we relocate northward again to the Denver area.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I like the palm trees and Fredericksburg the best. Keep at it!!

Thanks Robert! I’m thinking the Silverton RR as a subject matter possibility.
I am impressed with your painting. Keep it up.
Thanks Tom! This could be another new hobby for you maybe?
Very cool! I like all of your paintings, but especially like the blue bonnet one. Hidden talent! 🙂
Thanks Janet, yes the wildflowers in Texas were pretty cool and fun to paint.
Wow Randy! I love this! I love to draw (painting I’m not so good at) and find great inspiration in your paintings and your travels! Keep it up, love seeing the artwork and reading the stories. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Markel and it was great to hear from you! I need to catch up sometime soon.
These are AMAZING, Randy!!! You are no beginner! What a fabulous idea to paint places you’re visiting!!! Keep up the good work, doing new things, following your heart with your true love, Pat!
Thanks Laura for the sweet comments!
Wow! You are really getting good at your new hobby. Those paintings are great!
Thanks Randy! Not sure about great, but think they may be improving.
