Ohio Part 3: Amish Auction in Danville Oh & Put-In-Bay, Oh

This is our final part of the continuing series of our 2-week stay near Medina, Ohio.  We visited with family and saw some very interesting places.  These two places are about as diverse as you can get from several standpoints.  A study in contrasting cultures.  One a very basic 1700’s like environment and the other a resort with all the indulgences.

Amish Auction

Located near Danville Ohio, this small Amish community holds an auction every year to benefit their schools.  They were selling everything from hand made quilts to fine furniture.  This was a surprisingly large operation.  Maybe four large tents set up for auctioneers to work their crowds all at the same time in different tents. While we are not in the “acquiring”  mode anymore, it was still interesting to watch and observe the Amish culture.

Amish horse and buggy on the way into the town. It was hard to pass due to the twisty roads.
There must have been 50 or more buggies parked with their horses in different area tied up to the old hitching post

Some of the quilts on display prior to the auction.
Interesting table and benches showing some good craftsmanship
Amish boys checking out a bike to be auctioned.  All of their clothes were hand made from the same fabric.  Love the suspenders!
Cute photo cutesy of Tom Little.  The auction may have been boring for these little guys, but they were extremely well behaved.

Put-In-Bay Ohio

We really enjoyed this day trip to this small destination.  It was almost like the small island stops on a cruise ship.  To get to the island, one must take the ferry boat that travels every 30 minutes, so very convenient.  The only other way in is a small airstrip.  The ferry runs only through Dec 1st and then resumes in the spring, so the 138 residents must stock up on all food and supplies for the winter or else leave the island.

You can ferry your vehicle over, but with the narrow roads and limited parking, the best method is to rent a golf cart for the day.  The island is mostly a tourist destination, with water sports, golf courses, wineries, and many bars and restaurants.  For some reason, it is like being in a different country.  The island also played a significant part in the War of 1812 with Commodore Perry sailing from the port in the Battle of Lake Erie.

The ferry loads people on first then cars and trucks.  Actually a fun ride up on top of the ferry over to the island

Pat with nephew Justin at the worlds longest bar at over 405 feet long. The utilization did not look very good, but that is my accounting side talking.
It was fun eating lunch over looking the harbor with boats coming and going.
This buoy marker is a copy of the Key West southernmost point. KW is our favorite US destination and has many good memories for us.

This might be a future destination after RVing, to rent a small home for a week.  We will definitely return one of these days.  A fun day with family seeing the sights.

    1. Hi Laura, I had never seen this either! While I have had a bloody mary before, Tom had a drink from the do it yourself bloody mary bar that included many vegetables and bacon. He did make sure to have a full meal deal out of it!
