Ohio Part 2; Cleveland Art Museum and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Railway

This post continues with our nearly 2-week stay in Ohio.  We ventured into the big city of Cleveland a couple of times and were very impressed with the ability to get around and the many things to do.  The downtown area mostly looked great and it was evident that the older building were well cared for and many thriving businesses were present.

We had the choice of visiting the art museum or the rock and roll hall of fame and chose the museum for this visit.  The museum is free admission and has an incredible collection of many famous artists that even I could recognize. We visited with sister-in-law Ginny during the museum visit and had a lunch and coffee there as well.

Salvador Dali; quite strange to me

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Railway

The engine for our excursion train. Roughly a 3-hour round trip with a few places to get off if you wished
The passenger cars were all nicely maintained 1940’s or 50’s cars that were mostly original. I have been a train enthusiast for years, mainly due to my father worked for a railroad.
I do enjoy riding these excursion trains around the country partly for the countryside views but mainly to experience transportation on the slow but restful mode of transport
View of the inside of one of the passenger cars. There must have been 15 cars in total. We walked from car to car while underway with the loud clickety-clack of the wheels on the rails.   The entire experience brought back many memories of train travel as a child with my parents.
Trish in one of the spacious seats. Maybe the airlines can take notes.
The original formal dining car transformed into a snack bar. Not exactly a good change, but they had adult beverages, so we did not complain
The ladies had already started with the beverages
Some of the scenery along the route. One of these days, we would love to take a long train trip in the US.  Maybe after the RV travels.

After the train ride, we walked around the town of Peninsula Ohio and found a very nice trail. This is a photo of the old Ohio and Erie Canal locks. We walked along the old tow path.

This was another great day of exploring along our travel path.

  1. Your train pictures reminded me of train rides somewhere in PA when we were little kids. My oldest brother, Henry, loved trains. He traveled from Germany (Army base) to Holland (to visit relatives) with my parents when he was little. I remember him putting pennies on the track, waiting for the train to pass, and then running over to find the flattened pennies. I remember the clickety-clack and black smoke. Thanks for bringing back a memory. 🙂

  2. I also was especially fascinated by your train ride. That would be a great adventure indeed to do an extensive train trip. The storm in the pic of the pic of Pat and Ginny created a neat background.
