Mountain View, Missouri

This relocation has to be one of the easiest to navigate yet.  From Sikeston to Dexter the landscape is completely flat.  You can see for miles.  Once you reach Dexter and Crowley’s Ridge, things start to get interesting.  West of Poplar Bluff and the hills become like roller coasters.  We moved from SE Missouri to Mountain View, Missouri in the south central part of the state all along US-60.  In the heart of the Ozarks!

Our RV park is the Ozark Mountain Springs RV Park located about 9 miles west of Mountain View.  The park is just off the highway, US-60 and has very easy access for big rigs.  They also have full hook ups and trees to provide some shade for the hot days during our stay here.  One of the really cool features is their Pickin’ Parlor, a full music hall that is open on every Saturday night and provides a venue for local musicians (and the talented RV’er who happens to be passing through).  They also have BBQ ribs and pulled pork for this weekly event.  This park is mainly a 1-night stop over for those traveling to Branson, but we stayed for two weeks waiting for the warranty replacement of our convection microwave.

This area of Missouri is very rural and has limited job opportunities, so there just are not many people.  We did see a large wood products plant and another coke machine operation.  Besides those employers, it is mainly retail and service industries.  Here are some photos from our first week in this location.

the campground Pickin’ Parlor. Some good local musicians just show up to play.  Most of the crowd was hanging around the back of the hall.
Viandel Winery in Mountain View.  We went back on Saturday night for their monthly concert.
Nice back deck at the winery. Very relaxing.
We drove over to West Plains for a day, saw their museum, had a picnic lunch, stopped for a beer, then stocked up at Aldis, then back home about 30 minute drive.
West Plains, MO has this very neat late 1800’s Opera Hall.
Picnic at Alley Springs
This must be the most picturesque spring in Missouri – Alley Spring. A large working mill located at the spring.  It is currently not in operation due to some flooding damage in the spring.
The water color is hard to imagine being natural as was was so aqua blue. This color is caused by the minerals that the water flows through underground.
This photo was taken during the hike around the spring from the back side.  This spring has over 80 million gallons of water per day flowing down the river.  Something like 170 tons of calcium carbonate are carried away by the water from the spring.  Amazing!
Another spring in the area is Round Spring.  We drove to it and took the hike over the large rock wall shown here.

That’s all for this update.  I am continuing to practice with my guitar and attempting to be self-taught.  It takes some dedicated time and patience to get through the steep learning curve.  Pat has been catching up on some reading and researching many new recipes.  While here we have also been attending the First Baptist Church in the town, a large friendly congregation.

Have a great day and God Bless.

  1. Tell Pat to check out the new Karen White book, “The night the lights went out”. The pictures of blue water at Alley Spring are beautiful. 🙂
