Italy Tour – Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

The final stop on our 11-day tour of the highlights of Italy was in the city of Sorrento. It was to be our home base for the next three nights as we explored the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento is located on the southeast coast line of the country. The coastal roads are some of the narrowest and twisty in the world!

Sorrento Italy

Sorrento is a coastal town in southwestern Italy, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Perched atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas, it’s known for sweeping water views and Piazza Tasso, a cafe-lined square. The historic center is a warren of narrow alleys.

With a population of 16,000 people, this town dates back to 600 BC. Our hotel was about a 10 minute walk from downtown and also near some coastal views. We found a fine restaurant that we tried on an evening that we were on our own. The food was great and the couple at the next table were from Britain and they had a summer home in Sorrento. Many tourists in this town.

The Amalfi Coast

This day was a long bus ride all along the towering coastline. There were awesome views all along this route. Many of these photos were from the bus window.

Positano was the next town that we would pass through. This is another very popular tourist town.

Then we saw Praiano from the bus windows.

Look at the walkway on the left. Or was that a road? I forget…

Furore:

Conca dei Marini. This was a coffee break stop for the driver and guess what? A gift shop and lemon juice place! They make this lemon drink that is very tasty.

Our final destination is Amalfi:

Cetara below. Our bus to this region had to park in another part of town and could not come back to pick us up as buses were one way only. So, we all had to catch a city bus that was packed (photo above). Our standing room only ride was about 20 minutes back to our mini bus. Then it was the highway back to Sorrento.

This little place was called Meta:

Sant Angello. Another coffee break at a lemon processing plant. They made limoncello of course.

Wrap Up

Next up is our boat ride over the the island of Capri. Thanks for following along. My posts to document the Italy tour are about to end. Take care and God Bless.
