Flight To Indy To See The Moms

Gotta see the moms! We wanted to work in a weeklong trip back to Indiana to see our moms before taking off on our spring/summer/fall plans. Finally decided to extend our stay here at Llano Grande Resort by a couple of weeks. This is a very safe and secure park to leave our rolling home for a week. So, we booked our flights and a rental car and were off to the Great Up North on Tuesday March 19th!

It is a long travel day. Here’s a quick recap: drive from our Winter Texan home to Harlingen Tx. Then a commuter jet to Dallas. After a 2.5 hour layover it was an MD-80 flight to Indianapolis. Grabbed the rental car and drove the hour to Greencastle where we stay with Pat’s mom. It was about 12 hours total in transit.

This is the closest that I can get to the Admirals Club – outside by the door!

Our moms are both doing great. Pat’s mom lives by herself in Greencastle and my mom lives in an independent living facility on the northside of Indy. It was good to see them and hang out for a few days.

I took my mom to Farmersburg, Indiana to see her two remaining sisters on one of the days. It was a long day of driving but great that they had a chance to visit. It is the only opportunity they have to see each other.

I took mom to lunch at the Gray Brothers cafeteria in Mooresville. This was the place that we would eat as a family back in the 70’s and 80’s. Many memories.

Pat’s brother Alan and her sister Sandy also came by to visit with us for a awhile. It was great to catch up with them. One of Pat’s main objectives was to make as many freezer meals as possible for her mom. She worked almost non-stop during the week to finally end up with 150 of the freezer meals. Her mother is 91 and has some vision difficulty, so the pre-prepared meals are a blessing for her.

My hot bride, Trish, and me back in 1975. I looked through all 20 photo albums while we were there. Great memories!

A local workout gym offered me a guest pass for the week, so I was able to continue my workouts. In addition to that, I escaped one day to Terre Haute, Indiana about 45 miles west for a afternoon of museum tours with Alan and his son Aaron. We saw the Swope Art Museum and the Eugene V. Debs museum.

The art museum is very nice with a good collection of 19th and 20th century pieces of American art by well known artists as well as many Indiana artists.

A painting by an Indiana artist of Deming Park, a local Terre Haute park that I enjoyed as a kid.

The Debs museum is located in his restored 1890 home that is now a national landmark. The grand old home is cool to tour seeing the many fireplaces and fine woodwork. Debs was a union leader beginning work on the railroad. Later on he was a leader in the Socialist Party, even running for president. Many of those failed socialist theories are still with us today. Very interesting.

Sunday dinner at Mom’s place with my brother Kevin, his wife Heather, and son Drew. We all had a great time visiting and enjoying the time with mom.

Soon we were back home flying over South Padre Island.
Our winter home this morning at sunrise. I’ll miss this place.

That’s all for this week! Thanks for following along. Subscribe to the blog for email updates and leave a comment if you wish. Take care and God Bless.
