Our plans are now in place for this coming fall and winter for our RV travel escape the snow plan. The route includes a northwest start to Indiana to see the Moms, then a southwest drive through some old favorite destinations, then finally down to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) for the winter. Reservations have been booked and preparations have begin for our fall/winter RV travel. But it is only the middle of the summer!
Most people who know me know that I like to have a well defined plan. And in the current RV crazy travel world, it can be difficult to book a short term reservation because many are full up. Record numbers of people bought RVs during the Covid times and are trying to use them. Reports are coming in of fully booked RV parks and discouraged campers. There will probably be many for sale next spring.
The photos in today’s blog are Pat’s from around our home in the spring and early summer.
We actually had our travel reservations booked in mid-May for the Texas destination and all stops on the way. Getting into our park in the RGV can be difficult, at least it was pre-Covid. Although, it was quite easy for the upcoming season since the Canadians were still on lockdown.
Ever since we stayed at Llano Grande three years ago we have been wanting to return. It is a very nice RV park with beautiful lots and landscaping and more amenities and activities than anywhere we have seen. The only downside is the distance from here in Virginia. It is about 1,500 miles whereas Florida is about 700 miles.
Our route to the Texas RGV will be over 2,100 miles as we add a loop to the Hoosier state to see the moms. They are both doing well for their ages I guess. It will be good to see them and other family before being gone for six months.
We prefer to travel about 150 miles at a time and then stay for at least 2-3 days before moving on. On this winter’s travel plan we are stretched out a bit more with one travel day at 300 miles, two stops of only one day each, and then four stops at two days. We had some ground to cover!
Our RV friends, BJ and Mike like to cover some vast distances in their Tiffin motorhome. They enjoy the 500+ mile days. I used to travel that way back in my working days. Having only a few vacation days per year forces a fast pace and then return to work semi-exhausted. Then rest up at work. 🙂
But, now that we are in full retirement mode, the slo-mo approach is more relaxing. We are taking a full month to get to our Texas winter home, stay there for four months and then another month to return back home on April 1st. It will be a six month vacation!
On the plus side of this fast paced agenda will be some longer stops in Indianapolis, Vicksburg MS, Abbeville LA, and San Antonio TX. These will all be repeat visits for some of our favorite locations.
Indy has our family, Vicksburg has much history and other cool sights, Abbeville has Betty’s RV park and some of the best Cajun cuisine ever, and San Antonio has the Riverwalk, museums, and other sights.

Betty’s in Fall or Spring?
This fall on the way to Tx. Maybe in the spring too on the way back home, but that is still not planned.
Looks like a great plan. We always look forward to your posts and will be interested to catch up on your travels. Be safe
