It continues to amaze me at the quality of museums in our nation’s capital. The Smithsonian Museums have some new displays each time that we visit. There are also many other private museums in the city and we were able to work in a new one. In this post, I’ve included a few highlights from our DC museum visits and a few photos. Enjoy.
National Building Museum
This was a new one for us. I had never even heard of the National Building Museum until our son Bryan suggested that we attend. The displays were interesting, if not somewhat limited. What was quite amazing was the building itself.
The building itself dates back to 1882. Info from their website:
The historic home of the National Building Museum was built between 1882 and 1887 for three distinct purposes: to house the headquarters of the United States Pension Bureau, to provide a suitably grand space for Washington’s social and political functions, and to commemorate the service of those who fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War.
The Great Hall has many Corinthian columns that are said to be the largest in the world located inside of a building.
Great Hall
316 feet by 116 feet, 159 feet (approximately 15 stories) at its highest point
Corinthian Columns
75 feet high, 8 feet in diameter, 25 feet in circumference. Each built with 70,000 bricks and originally painted to resemble marble in 1895
National Museum of American History
We walked through most of the museum in 2-3 hours and enjoyed it as we have in the past. On display, they include many artifacts from our countries past.

Thanks for following along! Be sure to sign up for new updates and leave a comment if you wish. Up next is our old hometown in southwest Virginia. Take care and God Bless.
Looks like a great visit.
