Clermont, Florida – Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Clermont, Florida – Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The second Disney park that we visited during our stay in Clermont, Florida was the Animal Kingdom (AK). And it was our favorite of the three! Since it has been years since we visited any of the Disney parks, the Animal Kingdom was not built back then. If you have never been to the AK, just imagine being transported to an African safari complete with rustic villages, overland jeep type rides through wild animal’s habitats, and other up close displays!

Intro

This was just like a trip to Africa and the Himalayans without the 21 hour flight! We visited this park on a very busy day with our good friends Cal and Sue. And picked a weekday to avoid the high weekend crowds, but it seems they are packed every day. Oh well, had a great time anyway waiting about an hour for some attractions.

Our visit was in mid-february before all the China/Virus/Panic really hit the news. We used good common sense by using “approved” hand washing tried to keep some distance. Guess it worked out fine as it is now about a month later and we are still kicking.

About the Park

From wikipedia: “it is the largest theme park in the world, covering 580 acres. The park opened on April 22, 1998, and was the fourth theme park built at the resort. AK is dedicated and themed entirely around the natural environment and animal conservation, a philosophy once pioneered by Walt Disney himself.”

The park hosts 14 million visitors per year at $109 each person per day plus $25 to park your car. It is the sixth-most-visited theme park in the world.

Attractions

One of the top attractions was the Kilimanjaro Safari that we were lucky enough to get a fastpass ticket. It was almost exactly a duplicate of what you would expect to find in Africa. You climb aboard the all-terrain safari vehicle and let your driver/tour guide take you on an adventure as only Disney can. They will point out the wild African animals—zebras, rhinos, lions, and giraffes—and all you have to do is shoot … a picture, that is.

The guides are pretty entertaining. Your adventure will be interrupted by “dangers,” just like the real ones out in the wilds. During your safari, you’ll travel rutted dirt trails, cross shallow waterways, and plow through heavy vegetation to reach a spectacular view of a vast African plain.

Expedition Everest (a mountain top roller coaster) was closed due to equipment malfunction. It is another top attraction we missed.

We did see it’s tough to be a bug. More of a kids feature but I liked the multimedia “ride” that uses 3D video to put you with the bugs.

The Avatar Flight of Passage had the longest wait at 3 hours so we quickly bypassed it, but I heard some great things about it. Maybe next time.

And the animatronics bird show.

Other Interests

In addition to the attractions above there are many exhibits to see along the walkways. Such as a huge aquarium, a bird sanctuary, gorilla exhibit, chimp habitat, and much more. All very well done as you would expect at Disney.

We also ate lunch with Cal and Sue having some kind of an African chicken dish with a dark lager beer. Very tasty.

Thanks for following along! Take care and God bless.
