We have really been enjoying the spring and summer in the Virginia mountains and our new mid-century home! So much so that I kind of got away from regular blog updates. It has now been over two months since the last post! I have missed writing and creating posts that document our activities and happenings in life. I will endeavor to catch back up.
Great Smoky Mountains and Back Home
It has been just over a month since my last post. Much longer than I had planned, but life has been busy. Good, but a tiring busy. Since that last post we spent a week in Sevierville, Tennessee and then returned to our home in Virginia. And a blur of activity after returning back home.
Northbound – Alabama & Tennessee
Our winter escape to the warm climates of Florida is now over and we are returning to Virginia by a different route this year. Since we were in the western panhandle of Florida, we drove north wanting to spend a couple of weeks in Alabama. But, it wasn’t to be as one of the largest spring storms in several years drove us out! Follow along as we are northbound to Alabama and Tennessee.
The Forgotten Coast – part 2
The Forgotten Coast is the gulf coastal stretch in Florida’s upper panhandle. The section with the lack of condos, strip malls, and chain restaurants. This is the second and last post from this very enjoyable and relaxing week. No traffic jams, no large throngs of people passing on the walkways. Yes, I enjoy the quiet old Florida towns.
Forgotten Coast of Florida
From our last location on the gulf coast we continue soaking up the Old Florida character by relocating to near Apalachicola Florida. This small old fishing village is found on the “Forgotten Coast.” From their website: Franklin County Florida, also known as the Forgotten Coast, is nestled in the panhandle of the Sunshine State. This beautiful region has been dubbed the Forgotten Coast because it’s the last remaining stretch of unspoiled, pristine Gulf Coast beaches that haven’t been overrun by high rises and strip malls. The Forgotten Coast includes the charming communities of Apalachicola, Alligator Point, Carrabelle, St. George Island & Eastpoint. LINK
Cedar Key FL – Final
This is the final post from our time in this great example of Old Florida. Cedar Key FL is located four miles out into the Gulf on the northern west coast. It is the fishing village that time forgot. I’ve posted a few more photos in this update. Hope you enjoy!
Cedar Key – Part 2
In my last post, I reviewed the history of Cedar Key and some of the current status of the island chain located some four miles out into the gulf. In this post, (part 2) we explore the main island some more and try some of the tasty fares at the local restaurants.
Cedar Key FL – In Search of Old Florida!
Our commute was only about an hour on some lonely two lane Florida roads. Many scrubby palm trees and palmettos mingled in with the old twisted live oak trees fully draped with Spanish moss. And very few vehicles in this remote area. Very refreshing! Cedar Key FL – In Search of Old Florida!
Williston Crossing RV Resort & Wood Turning
I noticed an interest posting on the board while we were at the RV resort in Williston Florida. The Williston Crossings RV Resort has a full wood shop that has a couple of table top wood lathes. I have recently wanted to learn how to make some small wooden items on lathe – wood turning. Another new hobby!

The Villages Lunch & Friends
Just before leaving our February home in Williston, FL, we drove south an hour to the fastest growing central Florida town. I have many mixed feelings about the Villages in Florida, but meeting good friends is always a great day!
